Mold Cemetry
For nearly, 150 years, Mold Cemetery has been at the heart of the town’s history, providing a peaceful place for remembrance,. Reflection and tribute. Located on Alexandra Road, Mold, the cemetery is the town’s only active burial ground and have served the community since it first opened in 1877.
Spanning 2.20 hectares, the cemetery has become the final resting place for more than 8,400 individuals, including burials and cremated remains. Today, it continues to provide a dignified and tranquil setting where families can honour loved ones and connect with Mold’s rich heritage.
An Award-Winning Cemetery
Mold Cemetery has earned national recognition for its exceptional standards of management, maintenance, heritage conservation and environmental stewardship.
In 2026, Mold Cemetery was awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award, making it the only cemetery in Flintshire to hold this status. The award recognises the cemetery as a welcoming, safe, sustainable and well-managed green space that serves both the community and the environment.
The Green Flag Award reflects the dedication of Mold Town Council and cemetery staff in maintaining a site where natural beauty, local history and compassionate care come together.
A Cemetery Rich in History
Mold Cemetery is not only a place of remembrance but also an important part of the town's cultural heritage.
Among those buried here is Daniel Owen (1836–1895), widely regarded as the father of the Welsh novel and one of Wales' most celebrated literary figures. A former Chairman of Mold Urban District Council, Daniel Owen's grave remains an important place of pilgrimage and remembrance, with annual commemorations taking place during the Gŵyl Daniel Owen Festival.
The cemetery is also home to a number of Commonwealth War Graves and war memorials, honouring those who served their country during times of conflict. Alongside these memorials stand Victorian monuments and historic headstones that tell the story of generations of Mold residents.
Caring for Nature
Mold Cemetery is more than a burial ground; it is also a valuable green space supporting local wildlife and biodiversity.
The Town Council actively manages mature trees, hedgerows, wildflower areas and green spaces to encourage birds, pollinators and native species. Environmentally responsible practices are embedded throughout the cemetery's management, including:
- No use of chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers.
- Sustainable waste management and recycling.
- Conservation of mature trees and historic landscape features.
- Ongoing biodiversity enhancement projects.
These efforts help ensure that the cemetery remains a peaceful sanctuary for both people and wildlife.
Managed with Care
Mold Town Council takes great pride in maintaining the cemetery to the highest possible standards. Management is delegated to the Cemetery Committee, comprising six elected Councillors who oversee policy, regulations and future development.
Day-to-day operations are undertaken by dedicated cemetery staff who ensure that the grounds remain welcoming, respectful and beautifully maintained throughout the year. The Council employs full-time staff, supplemented by seasonal support when required, to care for the grounds and supervise burials.
Special arrangements are also available to improve accessibility, including vehicle access for visitors with mobility difficulties. The cemetery remains open seven days a week, providing a place of peace and reflection for all members of the community.

Mold Town Council provides clear procedures and guidance to assist families with the transfer of burial rights, including situations where ownership is transferred through a Statutory Declaration.
In the rare event of a dispute concerning burial rights or grave ownership, the Council has an established procedure to ensure matters are considered fairly, sensitively and in accordance with relevant legislation and cemetery regulations.

Memorials
Mold Cemetery provides a dignified and respectful setting for memorials that honour and celebrate the lives of loved ones.
Before any headstone, plaque or other memorial can be installed, a Memorial Application Form must be submitted and approved by the Council. This ensures that all memorials comply with cemetery regulations and are installed safely and appropriately.
The Council works closely with families and memorial masons to maintain the character, appearance and safety of the cemetery while providing meaningful opportunities for remembrance.
Living Memorials – Planting in Memory
As part of our commitment to creating a peaceful and beautiful environment, Mold Town Council offers families the opportunity to create a living memorial within designated areas of the cemetery.
Residents may arrange for the planting of a suitable shrub or bush in memory of a loved one, accompanied by a commemorative plaque.
Please note:
- The shrub or bush must be supplied by the applicant.
- Any memorial plaque must be supplied by the applicant.
